Are You Prepared for Hurricane Season?

Once You Read This Blog, You Will Be!

Even in paradise, there are good days and bad days. Unfortunately, for Sunshine State residents, some of our bad days begin after June 1—the official start of hurricane season.

Thankfully, Cornerstone Pros is here for you through every season, delivering expert plumbing, electrical, heating and AC service across Tampa and beyond. While we’ll do everything we can to ensure your home remains your safe haven, it’s up to you to make sure you’re hurricane ready!

Here’s what you need to do to keep your family SAFE!

S: Stock Up on Supplies

A hurricane can leave you housebound for days, if not longer. So, you should have these necessities readily available:

  • Batteries
  • Candles & flashlights
  • First aid supplies, such as adhesive bandages, ice packs, hydrogen peroxide, etc.
  • Nonperishable food
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery-powered radio
  • At least a three-day supply of drinking water
  • … And other items essential for your family’s safety and wellbeing

A: Analyze Your Home

While you can’t completely protect your home from structural damage, there are some preventive measures you can take. Cut weak branches and trees that could fall on your house, make sure your exterior doors are hurricane proof, seal outside wall openings and address other issues that could cause structural damage to your home.

To prepare for the possibility of severe damage to your home, you should prepare an inventory of your personal property for insurance purposes. While you’re at it, double-check that your insurance covers the replacement of your personal possessions if damage occurs.

F: Finalize Your Evacuation Plans

Evacuations rarely come with ample notice. So it’s crucial you have an evacuation plan in place ahead of time. Map out the route your family will follow and create a checklist of essential items you need to grab before hitting the road, including birth certificates, Social Security cards, important home documents and more. Encourage your family to pack bags, too. This will help you get out the door and reach safer ground faster.

E: Ensure You Can Power Through the Storm

Severe weather and power loss often come hand-in-hand. And power loss comes with these problems:

  • Spoiled food
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Loss of running water (if you’re on a well)
  • Mold growth
  • … And more!

One way to power through power outages is to install a whole-home backup generator in your home. Unfortunately, there’s a major delay on the availability of these systems at the moment, which means installing one may not be an option for this hurricane season. But don’t worry. We won’t let you get left in the dark. We offer what you need to operate a portable generator safely—and that’s a generator interlock kit!

A portable generator can’t be directly connected to an electrical panel. Doing so is not only illegal, but it’s extremely dangerous and can potentially “fry” your appliances. What you need is a “middleman.” This is where a generator interlock kit comes into play. This device eliminates unsafe generator back-feeding, making it safe for you to connect your portable generator to your electrical panel while protecting you from potential disasters.
